The History of Winsulator

Mr. Ed Vervane

Founder of Winsulator Technologies

In the early 1980’s, the Plaskolite Company created the Winsulator system to help reduce energy usage in homes. In 1990, Ed was selling home improvement solutions in his home state of Michigan and the company he was working for was a local authorized Winsulator dealer. Ed instantly fell in love with the Winsulator. Never had he seen a product that had such impressive results, it basically sold itself.

Ed helped people all over Michigan make their homes more comfortable and save energy with the Winsulator. But Ed’s true heart was in Florida where his parents had gone to retire.  Ed picked up and followed his mother and father to Sarasota. Not long after his arrival in Florida, Ed noticed that all the windows in Florida had the same problems as the windows in Michigan! They were poor at insulating against the outside temperatures, and they let in a ton of noise.  Ed reached out to the owner of Plaskolite and asked if he had a dealer in Florida. Ed was surprised to hear he did not.  Ed knew that The Winsulator was a no brainer and decided to invest in a dealership.

Ed was on a mission, and it didn’t take long for people to take notice. Before you knew it, Ed was installing 1500 Winsulators for the United States Navy! And it didn’t stop there. Over the next couple of years, Ed and his team installed The Winsulator in hundreds of high-profile government buildings, schools, libraries, hotels, and historic properties. Ed also made several innovative engineering changes to the original design that were tested and approved by NASA engineers. He did this to improve the performance and sustainability of working in hot, humid climates, as well as cold climates.

Eventually Plaskolite decided to focus its attention on other areas of its business and offered to sell Ed the exclusive rights to the Winsulator design and manufacturing worldwide! This opportunity was directly tied to Ed’s passion for the business and his ability to put The Winsulator on the national map.

Since then, Ed has been faithfully serving his clients across the country and abroad. Now retired, Ed serves as a Special Consultant for Winsulator-Technologies and resides in Sarasota with his lovely bride.

Winsulator’s Relationship with NASA

The highlight of Ed’s career was his relationship with NASA. As a participant in the (TOP) Technology Outreach Program, NASA got their engineers involved to see how well The Winsulator held up to scientific testing. They submitted the Winsulator System for testing and analysis to the world-renowned Oakridge National Laboratories. The results were beyond impressive!

  • Energy usage reduced by 29%,

  • Noise reduced by 60%,

  • Dust and pollen infiltration reduced by 78%

  • Interior condensation reduced by 91%

All of this with a 2.3 year payback. This was the data Winsulator needed to take things to the next level. And the next level is exactly where Ed and Winsulator went…

A solution for NASA. A solution for YOU.

Florida’s Heat used to overwhelm NASA officials on the fourth floor of the Kennedy Space Center’s Headquarters.

From the elevator, through the hallways, around the building, even into the center director's private conference room: no windowed room was immune. At only 12 feet by 30 feet, the conference room was insufferable. When the doors were closed and conferences were in session, the Space Center's most powerful officials smothered.

Standing by the elevators, NASA Public Affairs Specialist Manny Virita looks toward the adjacent windows and remembers how it used to be. There was a phone in the hallway, he recalls, but the heat made it too unbearable to make a call.

"No matter how high you turned up the air conditioner, the heat (from the windows) would just warm the air," Virita says.

Not anymore.

In 1995, NASA found a solution: The Winsulator system cut temperatures through the windows by 30 degrees. Their sales across the nation are a testament to the Winsulator’s performance, the same product Ed Vervane sold to NASA.
